Manchester United’s revolution has started. The arrival of Portuguese coach José Mourinho as a successor for Louis Van Gaal at the Old Trafford has also brought the Red Devils a new strength on the transfer market, considering the ties between Mou and the ‘King of the Market’, the Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes. Even without a spot for Champions League football in the upcoming season, indeed, United has been able to attract several prominent players, such as former Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who confirmed yesterday (on Twitter) Manchester as his next destination.

Another deal waiting to be finalised involves Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Armenian offensive midfielder, currently playing for Borussia Dortmund, is widely believed to be Mourinho’s next signing. Yesterday, United’s official website carried images of their new blue away kit bearing the midfielder’s name on the back. The page was soon removed, but rumours have been spreading since.

These two signings contribute to creating a massive overcrowding in United’s offensive sector: considering Mourinho’s typical tactic, consisting of a 4-2-3-1, the available spots are 3 for offensive midfielders and 1 for a striker. As of now, the Red Devils count 11 men for those 4 spots: Depay, Mata, Martial, Rooney, Januzaj, Young, Rashford, Lingard, Pereira, Ibrahimovic, and Mkhitaryan.

Even if Spain international Juan Mata is believed to be on his way out of Old Trafford, that still leaves Mourinho to deal with a number of players who cannot be left to rotten on the bench (like youngsters Rashford, Lingard and Pereira – all in need to play in order to develop). On the other side, massive investments like Martial, Depay or Rooney (considering his contract) need to be deployed on the pitch; United’s fans just hope for Mourinho to be wiser that Hodgson, and to understand that Wazza‘s talent is wasted on the midfield line.

The overcrowding of the Red Devils’ attacking section will likely bring more transfers, with Ashley Young and Adnan Januzaj as main candidates to leave Old Trafford during the summer. The risk, for Manchester United, is to be put in a position of being forced to sell: that will not facilitate obtaining a good deal for must-sell players like Young.
